How To Produce a Photo for the Web Using Photoshop

Posted by Shawn Smith on February 6, 2009

This is a simple tutorial for how to use photoshop to crop, size and save your photos and images for posting on the web.

Most photos posted on this blog should be no larger than 500 pixels wide. The height doesn’t matter as much as the width, but I’d recommend not to exceed 300 pixels in height. Photos can be less wide and shorter.

Photos posted on the web should be no larger than 100k in memory. Many people still use dial-up modems which can take a long time to surf the web if images are too large in memory size.

How to post audio in a wordpress post

Posted by Shawn Smith on January 30, 2009

  1. Make sure the name of your file has no spaces in it’s name. It should look something like this “20090129-interview-obama.mp3” without the quote marks.
  2. Upload the file to the web folder in your AFS space. The URL of your file should be http://www.msu.edu/~YOURNAME/FILENAME.mp3
  3. Copy the URL of your file.
  4. Paste the following code into the HTML mode of your wordpress entry:
  5. Paste the URL of your file in the following code: [audio YOURURL]
  6. When you preview your entry, you will see the audio player with your audio. In the post-entry page, you should only see the link to the audio and not the player. You will only see the player on the userside of the page.

Example: [audio http://wpcom.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/mattmullenweg-interview.mp3]

Audio test using AFS space

Posted by travisj5 on January 30, 2009

hello, for those of you interested in just using your AFS space, here’s how:

First, you may  need to set up your AFS space. It doesn’t take long, and you get space you can use for your files, so no more thumb drives or emailing things to yourself. Find out how here.

1. click Overflow on the left side of your screen.

2. Click Internet

3.Click the green ball on the bottom.

4. When prompted, put in your netID and password.

5. Click your username option. There should now be a drive on the desktop with your username as its name. Open it. Anything you want to put online should go in the “Web” folder.

The address of any file you put there will be http://www.msu.edu/~username/filename.file

YouTube Video Embedding

Posted by Cory Smith on January 29, 2009

I noticed that some people are having trouble with HTML coding and inserting their videos. I’ve created a little “FAQ” if you will, on how to properly insert your videos and how to make them show up in “wide-screen” and “high quality” as well.  If you need some help, hopefully this will work for you.
