How To Produce a Photo for the Web Using Photoshop

Posted by Shawn Smith on February 6, 2009

This is a simple tutorial for how to use photoshop to crop, size and save your photos and images for posting on the web.

Most photos posted on this blog should be no larger than 500 pixels wide. The height doesn’t matter as much as the width, but I’d recommend not to exceed 300 pixels in height. Photos can be less wide and shorter.

Photos posted on the web should be no larger than 100k in memory. Many people still use dial-up modems which can take a long time to surf the web if images are too large in memory size.

Posted by Shawn Smith on January 30, 2009

  1. Make sure the name of your file has no spaces in it’s name. It should look something like this “20090129-interview-obama.mp3” without the quote marks.
  2. Upload the file to the web folder in your AFS space. The URL of your file should be http://www.msu.edu/~YOURNAME/FILENAME.mp3
  3. Copy the URL of your file.
  4. Paste the following code into the HTML mode of your wordpress entry:
  5. Paste the URL of your file in the following code: [audio YOURURL]
  6. When you preview your entry, you will see the audio player with your audio. In the post-entry page, you should only see the link to the audio and not the player. You will only see the player on the userside of the page.

Example: [audio http://wpcom.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/mattmullenweg-interview.mp3]

Michigan State University Journalism Students Start Reporting for the Web

Posted by Shawn Smith on January 16, 2009

About 14 Michigan State University students will undergo an intensive five-week training course on reporting for the web.

As communcation methods have quickly evolved in recent years, it’s imperative students get a grasp of what audiences want and how to deliver content to them, instructor Shawn Smith says.

In the class, students will learn how to shoot and edit video, conduct audio interviews, take photos, write for the web, use promotional strategies for increasing traffic and other web skills. The class will culminate with a group project that incorporates all that they learned during the course.

“We’re really excited for this class,” co-teacher and TV newsman Bob Gould says. “The tools and skills we’re teaching in this course are going to help these students get jobs in an increasingly competitive job market.”
