Getting Involved in MSU’s University Activities Board

Posted by Caitlin Tetrick on October 1, 2009

The University Activities Board (UAB) at Michigan State University is responsible for many of the events seen around campus.  UAB is made up of MSU students who are interested in planning activities for the student body. Most of UAB’s activities are free to students and require only a valid MSU ID. Each year UAB plans a historical hayride, concerts, dive in movies, as well as countless concerts and craft nights. Any MSU student can get involved in UAB, all they have to do is come to one of the general board meetings on Monday nights at the MSU Union.

The Michigan State Spartan Marching Band

Posted by Caitlin Tetrick on September 17, 2009

The Michigan State Spartan marching band sets the tone for the entire football season.

As the first music tone resonates through the stadium, the fans let out cheers as they watch the band run out of the tunnel playing the Spartan fight song.  The student section eats it up, filling with pride as they watch their peers lead the tone of the game.

Many people don’t realize that the Spartan band is not made up of only music majors, but rather, a group of students who share a passion for music whose majors range from biochemistry to advertising.  The band practices Monday through Friday from 4:30 -6 in addition to a practice on Saturday mornings before game day.

The band will travel to Notre Dame this Saturday to help cheer on the football team as the face Jimmy Clausen and the rest of the Fighting Irish.

Michigan State University Rethink Summit: The Future of Journalism

Posted by Caitlin Tetrick on September 17, 2009

The Michigan State University School of Journalism’s ReThink News Summit convened on Friday.

The conference, comprised of journalists, students and business people, concluded that the newspaper is not dead yet.

A recurring theme of the conference was how youth has redefined news. Many panelists often referenced the growth of Facebook and Twitter and popular topics on those social media as proof of this.

Another popular topic: the lack of interaction between news agencies and their consumers, the public. One panelist recalled newspapers that used to have bars in their lobbies. These bars served as rendezvous locales for journalists and their readers, helping the newspapers better understand what their customers wanted. Now, the panel often remarked, there is no such connection between the two.

The decay of the relationship between newspapers and their readers has led the latter to newer media, such as Google which has personalized settings that help filter news to suit specific desires.

Such trends are the future and the media needs to better accommodate and include its readership.

A Bit About Caitlin

Posted by Caitlin Tetrick on September 11, 2009

Hi! My name is Caitlin Tetrick and I am a 20 year old junior majoring in journalism here at MSU.  I got started in journalism in high school and was editor of my high school’s yearbook.

I’m an avid sports fan and love any sport I can possibly watch or play.  I grew up swimming and playing soccer.  As a child I was also in love with the University of Michigan football team, but upon deciding to go to state I quickly changed sides!  I have a younger brother Mike and a younger sister Rachel.  Mike is a freshman at State and Rachel is still in high school.  Both of them are interested in media as well, with Mike focusing on computer animation, and Rachel focusing on graphic design.

In the future I hope to be a sports reporter/designer for either Sports Illustrated or ESPN.  Maybe some day you all will see me on the sidelines, interviewing the players.

I’m excited to be in this class and I am happy you all will be watching my videos!4463_880051158284_2357133_53668357_85273_n
