Risking skin cancer just to get tan; is it worth it?
Posted by Jamie Gnebba on February 6, 2009
Society today tells us we must be thin and we must be tan. With spring break coming up students are rushing to the tanning salons to start working on their ‘beach bods.’ They are spending tons of money, and exposing themselves to the dangers of skin cancer just to ‘look good.’
Click the picture below to hear from some Michigan State University students about the reasons they go tanning.

Jamie…good solid audio and glad you were able to get some images.
The only criticism is that the pics fly by a little too quickly. I like the sot though and it flows really well.

This is just dumb – the issue not the presentation. Might be interesting to get a guy’s perspective. Do they do it? Do they like it that women do?
Really liked the skin cancer pics in the middle of the set. Good attention-getting contrast from the previous shots.

I have a sinking feeling that many of these images are copyrighted. I also thought that the narration by a succession of ill-informed valley girls didn’t do much for me. Sorry to be such a curmudgeon, but good journalism requires doing more than reinforcing ignorance.

Thank you for your comments, I really appreciate it. My intention was however, not to talk about the dangers of tanning. I used these specific audio clips just to prove the point that we all know about these dangers, yet the image society places on us of beauty encourages people to take these risks and do these things regardless of the consequences. The overall story isn’t about girls tanning, rather the fact that people are putting superficial things like looks above their health.

I liked the images in the middle from the magazines, it helped drive the point home. Overall, I liked the presentation.

After watching the story, reading the text, and reading these comments, I think that maybe the story needed a few paragraphs of text. How about some links to articles about the subject? The presentation was good overall, and although I also think you might have lifted a few copyright-protected pictures, I agree with Sara that they help get your message across.
